Cell Engineering
The set of methods used to construct new cells. It includes the cultivation and cloning of cells on specially selected media, hybridization of cells, transplantation of cell nuclei and other microsurgical operations to «disassemble» and «assemble» (reconstruct) viable cells from individual fragments.
History
The beginning of cell engineering belongs to the 1960s, when the method of hybridization of somatic cells appeared.
Somatic hybridization is carried out by cultivating together cells of different lines of the same species or cells of different types. Under certain conditions, two different cells merge into one hybrid, containing both genomes of the merged cells. It was possible to get hybrids between animal cells, for example. mouse and chicken. Somatic hybrids are widely used both in scientific research and in biotechnology.
nuclear-free cells
Another direction of cell engineering is manipulation of nuclear-free cells, free nuclei and other fragments, which boil down to combining dissimilar parts of the cell.
The advantage of cell engineering
The advantage of cell engineering is that it allows you to experiment with cells, not whole organisms. The latter is much more complicated, especially in the case of mammals and humans, or when receiving distant hybrids. Methods of cell engineering in medicine, agriculture or biotechnology are often used in combination with genetic engineering.
